The Science and Public Policy Institute announces the publication of Climate Money, a study by Joanne Nova revealing that the federal Government has a near-monopsony on climate science funding. [Monopsony = similar to a monopoly, but where a market governed by many sellers, but only one major buyer of the goods or service.]
This distorts the science towards self-serving alarmism. Key findings:
Ø The US Government has spent more than $79 billion of taxpayers' money since 1989 on policies related to climate change, including science and technology research, administration, propaganda campaigns, foreign aid, and tax breaks. Most of this spending was unnecessary.
Ø Despite the billions wasted, audits of the science are left to unpaid volunteers. A dedicated but largely uncoordinated grassroots movement of scientists has sprung up around the globe to test the integrity of "global warming" theory and to compete with a lavishly-funded, highly-organized climate monopsony. Major errors have been exposed again and again.
Ø The US Government has spent more than $79 billion of taxpayers' money since 1989 on policies related to climate change, including science and technology research, administration, propaganda campaigns, foreign aid, and tax breaks. Most of this spending was unnecessary.

Ø Meanwhile, in a distracting sideshow, Exxon-Mobil Corp is repeatedly attacked for paying just $23 million to skeptics-less than a thousandth of what the US government spends on alarmists, and less than one five-thousandth of the value of carbon trading in 2008 alone.
Ø The large expenditure designed to prove the non-existent connection between carbon and climate has created a powerful alliance of self-serving vested interests.
Ø By pouring so much money into pushing a single, scientifically-baseless agenda, the Government has created not an unbiased investigation but a self-fulfilling prophecy.
Ø Sound science cannot easily survive the vice-like grip of politics and finance.
Says Nova, "For the first time, the numbers from government documents have been compiled in one place. It's time to start talking of "Monopolistic Science". It's time to expose the lie that those who claim "to save the planet" are the underdogs. And it's time to get serious about auditing science, especially when it comes to pronouncements that are used to justify giant government programs and massive movements of money."
Robert Ferguson, SPPI's president, says: "This study counts the cost of years of wasted Federal spending on the 'global warming' non-problem. Government bodies, big businesses and environmental NGOs have behaved like big tobacco: recruiting, controlling and rewarding their own "group-think" scientists who bend climate modeling to justify the State's near-maniacal quest for power, control, wealth and forced population reduction.
"Joanne Nova, who wrote our study, speaks for thousands of scientists in questioning whether a clique of taxpayer-funded climate modelers are getting the data right, or just getting the "right" data. Are politicians paying out billions of our dollars for evidence-driven policy-making, or policy-driven evidence-making? The truth is more crucial than ever, because American lives, property and constitutional liberties are at risk."

At the 105th International Conference of the American Thoracic Society recently held in San Diego, researchers presented a study showing that the flu vaccine - widely touted as a "must have" for children with chronic illnesses - isn't effective in preventing influenza-related hospitalizations in children, especially ones with asthma. But here's the most damning evidence that flu shots aren't the safe, helpful vaccine the Centers for Disease Control ( CDC) and other government agencies claim: the researchers also found that children who get the flu vaccine are more at risk for hospitalization than their peers who do not get the vaccine.

It is still very unclear to me, watching this very slow-moving wave of claimed H1N1 "Swine Flu epidemic" spreading around the world -- so it is claimed -- if the actual mortality where so far only a few hundreds of people have died over many months, if these are cases which ordinary influenza would have claimed anyhow. Tens of thousands of people, young and old, die from various kinds of influenza every year, just within North America. How many of those are among the weakest and most immune deficient of our population, suffering from other conditions and problems before the flu claimed to have hit them. Nor is it clear if they died from the virus, or the medications being given to the flu patients, as seen in so many other 20th Century maladies, and for which the medical professoin as a whole has better hesitant to openly confront and take responsibility for. There is, practically speaking, nearly NO scientific criticism possible agianst the policy wonks in Washington DC, who proclaim this and that about science and nature with no more concern for authentic scientific evidence than the Pope had for Galileo, or the FDA had for Reich. Already I get propaganda emails saying the video circulated yesterday showing a half-dozen young men being hung was a "fake"... but of course it is brutally real, and nobody has presented anything to suggest it is an old item, or anything other than what it claims to be -- of young Iranian protestors being systematically executed.
This is "Islamic Spirituality" in its most full and complete expression. Anyone who deviates from the Islamic theocracy must be killed. Young people having their necks broken, life extinguished, but the crowd roars for more. Young girls shot dead, and the Islamic Police are joyful.

Walter Mitty Goes Cloudbusting in Arizona
In what must be a trend, news journalists often "become the story" by inserting themselves into the action, scenes, and narrative of events. They stand in front of a fire or shooting, and talk about themselves, how they are being influenced, and how they feel about it all, primping their hair-do and with one eye fixed on a mirror. Narcissists with defeated egos, needing a boost by any means possible. This is somewhat like the defeated character in the James Thurber short story, "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty", who isn't a narcissist by any means, but more of an innocent fellow who so badly yearns for excitement, he's constantly drifting off into a dream world where all kinds of heroic actions are undertaken, without any hard work or risks, of course. The borders between fantasy and reality blur.
I am now informed of a certain German video camera-man, Mr. John Trettin, who some years ago on my invitation, made some video shots of one of my field research projects. Specifically my OROP Arizona cloudbusting expedition back in 1989. That was an amazing field operation, composed of five different expeditions into the Arizona deserts, near Blythe California. It was a project conceived and carried out by myself with different assistants and helpers on the five different expeditions, myself who organized and planned it, acting as primary operator of the cloudbuster apparatus, which produced a "rainfall doubling" influence over the course of the year. A German film-crew volunteered to come along and document the first of the five operations... and that's all they did, was to make a video recording. During an off-time, when I was napping or something, one of the camera-men stood near the equipment, and had his picture taken. That's harmless enough. But now, needing that ever-elusive ego-boost, and gripped by the ghost of Walter Mitty (but in this case, not so innocent or lacking in narcissism), he claims it was his project, which he organized and carried out. As to the German Camera-Guy, here is his fantasy version of events:
The apparatus shown in the photo at the bottom is my large Cloudbuster Icarus, which I constructed back in 1976, and used in various projects. It is today located at my institute in rural Oregon. The Trettin "TV" website actually has many shots of him walking by the equipment, all carefully edited so as to end exactly as I walk into the picture, so I am now completely censored out of it. Oh, yes, my hands are shown in one sequence, pointing to a weather-map I drew. But... in this new "Secret Life of John Trettin" the narrative of events has been re-written. His head is in the clouds, his eyes on the mirror, and nobody is around except himself.
To be absolutely clear, Mr. Trettin was NOT the "Projektleiter" nor any kind of "Operateur" for the Arizona work, which he now abuses as a fund-raising gimmick. He may as well proclaim he also did the Tucson project of Wilhelm Reich, and personally wrote "Contact With Space", just because he took a photograph near Tucson, or read that book. Should he take a photograph of the German Chancellor, he'll next be calling himself "Chancellor Trettin", and imagine giving a serious, prophetic speech before the Bundestag, followed by a standing ovation, with calls for him to please, please accept the position of Secretary-General of the UN! For years he has presented himself to the public as "an officially recognized Tibetan Buddhist Lama", complete with certificates! Also now "a Professor Dr.", also with "certificates". Maybe also "Space Shuttle Pilot". Or, "Rock Star".... With Certificates! Certainly he must have paid at least 100 Euro for all that paperwork. Where does the truth end, and the fantasy lies begin? I can't tell, but I don't particularly care to have my good work being made the subject of this man's delerium.
For those new to the whole subject of Reich's orgone energy research, this kind of pestilent behavior has been going on for years. Reich called such people "emotional pests". If people aren't throwing bricks at us for doing this work and obtaining successful results, then they are stealing our work, or Reich's work, distorting it, and claiming it as their own.

Over the coming days a curiously revealing event will be taking place in Copenhagen. Top of the agenda at a meeting of the Polar Bear Specialist Group (set up under the International Union for the Conservation of Nature/Species Survival Commission) will be the need to produce a suitably scary report on how polar bears are being threatened with extinction by man-made global warming.
This is one of a steady drizzle of events planned to stoke up alarm in the run-up to the UN's major conference on climate change in Copenhagen next December. But one of the world's leading experts on polar bears has been told to stay away from this week's meeting, specifically because his views on global warming do not accord with those of the rest of the group.
Dr Mitchell Taylor has been researching the status and management of polar bears in Canada and around the Arctic Circle for 30 years, as both an academic and a government employee. More than once since 2006 he has made headlines by insisting that polar bear numbers, far from decreasing, are much higher than they were 30 years ago. Of the 19 different bear populations, almost all are increasing or at optimum levels, only two have for local reasons modestly declined.
Dr Taylor agrees that the Arctic has been warming over the last 30 years. But he ascribes this not to rising levels of CO2 - as is dictated by the computer models of the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and believed by his PBSG colleagues - but to currents bringing warm water into the Arctic from the Pacific and the effect of winds blowing in from the Bering Sea.
He has also observed, however, how the melting of Arctic ice, supposedly threatening the survival of the bears, has rocketed to the top of the warmists' agenda as their most iconic single cause. The famous photograph of two bears standing forlornly on a melting iceberg was produced thousands of times by Al Gore, the WWF and others as an emblem of how the bears faced extinction - until last year the photographer, Amanda Byrd, revealed that the bears, just off the Alaska coast, were in no danger. Her picture had nothing to do with global warming and was only taken because the wind-sculpted ice they were standing on made such a striking image.
Dr Taylor had obtained funding to attend this week's meeting of the PBSG, but this was voted down by its members because of his views on global warming. The chairman, Dr Andy Derocher, a former university pupil of Dr Taylor's, frankly explained in an email (which I was not sent by Dr Taylor) that his rejection had nothing to do with his undoubted expertise on polar bears: "it was the position you've taken on global warming that brought opposition".
Dr Taylor was told that his views running "counter to human-induced climate change are extremely unhelpful". His signing of the Manhattan Declaration - a statement by 500 scientists that the causes of climate change are not CO2 but natural, such as changes in the radiation of the sun and ocean currents - was "inconsistent with the position taken by the PBSG".
So, as the great Copenhagen bandwagon rolls on, stand by this week for reports along the lines of "scientists say polar bears are threatened with extinction by vanishing Arctic ice". But also check out Anthony Watt's Watts Up With That website for the latest news of what is actually happening in the Arctic. The average temperature at midsummer is still below zero, the latest date that this has happened in 50 years of record-keeping. After last year's recovery from its September 2007 low, this year's ice melt is likely to be substantially less than for some time. The bears are doing fine.
